Members and Friends
of the Academy of Financial Services,
As voted unanimously by the Board of
Directors, AFS will be meeting in Boston in October of 2008.
We will meet in association with the Financial Planning
Association (FPA). We will continue to meet in
conjunction with FPA for the foreseeable future. Given
the mission of the AFS, the FPA is the "natural fit" for our
group.
By meeting with the FPA, we anticipate
being able to attract presentations from all areas of
financial planning. Under our current setup, we have
too often been see as "FMA lite." Our recent meetings
have seen a large number of investment and corporate
submissions, with many of them only tangentially related to
financial planning. The FPA brings together
practitioners and academics in all fields of financial
planning. There are about 30,000 members of FPA; some
3,000 members and friends of FPA attend their annual
meeting. Meeting with the FPA allows the Academy
exposure to a large number of planners, regulators, and
researchers. As an added bonus, note that the CFP
Board of Standards intends to hold their Program Directors
meetings in association with FPA meetings.
I hope you share my excitement regarding
this new direction for AFS.
